MANAGING OILY, ACNE PRONE SKIN
Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Dairy Free Diaries. Hope you all had a great week, but if not there’s a new week coming, don’t forget that. This week’s blog post is on a topic that I had always felt like writing about, but never could find the words. But I think I have got them this time. I have dealt with oily, acne prone skin for my entire life. It peaked when I was in high school and now that I am 21, I have found the products and skincare routine that work for me. And that is what I am sharing with you all today. Hope you guys enjoy!
BEING SELF CONSCIOUS ABOUT MY SKIN
I have dealt with pretty much every side effect of having oily skin. You name it, I have dealt with it: acne, breakouts, shiny complexion, excess oil seeping into my hair. I know I have just listed the physical; the ones that you see. But I also want to point out the mental aspects. For so long I felt extremely self-conscious about my skin. Sometimes it was because I was breaking out in completely noticeable places. Other times it was the struggle of washing my face in the morning and feeling the clean, soft skin that would soon turn to an oily mess within a matter of hours.
And trust me I have tried every product on the market in hopes of fixing this problem. I have tried blotting sheets, pimple spot treatments, face masks, pimple patches, deep cleaning cleansers, oil-free products, oil-free moisturizers, and so many more. I found products that my skin absolutely hated, some that my skin slightly tolerated, and some that only worked for the first week or two. But never anything that stuck, which made me feel hopeless and very much so alone.
I could go on and on, but the important message I am trying to convey is that if you feel self-conscious about your skin, you are not alone. I, as well as many other people, deal with skin issues on a daily basis. But the reason we all feel so alone is because NO ONE TALKS ABOUT IT. This is the problem. Not just in this instance, but with so many other things. We don’t talk about the problems and so everybody thinks they are the only one. But I digress.
Being self-conscious about your skin is normal, but it should not keep you from doing the things you love or define the person you are. I used to let my skin determine whether I would be staying home that day or going to hang out with friends. And by doing so, I missed out on so many great memories. At the end of the day, you have no control over what skin type you are born with, and furthermore to the point, your skin shouldn’t be the thing controlling you. I know it can be hard, but at the end of the day the only opinion that matters is your own, not anybody else. And if you can learn to accept the things you cannot control, you will be much better off.
IMPROVING MY SKIN + PRODUCTS I LOVE
I know I have previously made a blog post dedicated to the skincare products I currently use, but some things have changed and I want to make this one specifically dedicated to oily skin. Some of the products I have use and currently use aren’t specifically for oily skin because ever since I have made the changes I have, my skin’s oil has decreased substantially. But for my girls out there that are currently struggling with excess oil, below are the products that have completely transformed my skin.
Then again, everyone is different, but I want to give you all a place to start. I am not guaranteeing any of this will work perfectly for you, but it’s somewhere to begin and make adjustments from. There is so much information out there and if you are feeling overwhelmed, I understand and I am giving you a place to start.
Face Cleanser: Green Apple Brightening Cleanser by Juice Beauty
Toner: January Labs Daily Brightening Tonic
Serum: Acure Brightening Super Greens Serum
Moisturizer: Acure Incredible Clear Mattifying Moisturizer
Spot Treatment: Mighty Patch Invisible Pimple Patches
Face Mask: Andalou Naturals Pumpkin Honey Glycolic Mask
These products were like my holy grail when I first started to want to care for my oily skin issues and have helped me greatly. I am a big supporter of non toxic skincare, but I think it’s important for everyone to do their own research and decide what’s best for them. All of the brands mentioned above are non-toxic and I highly recommend checking them out. Even if you don’t end up using the specific products mentioned, check out the brands and see what feel right for you. Skincare is extremely personal and unique to each and everyone of us. But in order to figure out what works, you must test out different options. Here are a few options for my oil, acne prone skin people. I hope that by starting this process you can transform your skin in a similar way that I did.
